Massage Treatments
Sports and Remedial Massages are a couple of different forms of massage treatments. It can be confusing to differentiate between all forms.
Massage is considered to be therapeutic, as well as stress relieving and relaxation, massage can be an important to healing.
Types of Massage
I offer sports and remedial massage treatments in my clinic at Bannatynes Health Club & Spa in Sutton Coldfield.
Below I explain the difference between the two types of massage I offer and who would benefit most for each type: sports massage and remedial massage.
What is Sports Massage?
Contrary to the name, sports massage is not just proposed for athletes and sports enthusiasts.
Aim of Sports Massage
The aim of sports massage is to increase blood flow by using free-flowing movements, flush the muscles, and loosen tight or injured parts of the body.
Sports massages are symptom directed, with an aim to remedy any dysfunctional issue in your muscles or connective tissue. Sports massage treatments target both the cause and the symptoms. This allows you to feel relief from your aches and pains, but also have the causing trigger points and restrictions in movement addressed to re-balance your biomechanics and enable pain free movement.
It is this reason why even those of us who are not full-time athletes may benefit from a sports massage.
Athletes and Sports Enthusiasts
For any athletes and sports enthusiasts, a pre-event sports massage will flush muscles, and help the tissues to warm up in order to supply optimal blood flow for performance. Please note a pre-event sports massage is not an adequate warm up by itself, you should still continue with your normal warm up routine.
Similar techniques are used post-event, usually a slower and at times lighter touch, to encourage removal of the toxins from the muscles. This approach aids some relief in the areas of pain or discomfort by releasing muscle tissue and tension.

What is Remedial Massage?
Remedial massage is designed to treat both superficial and deep tissues. It may involve some of the techniques used in a sports and/or deep tissue massage, whichever technique is required to address any muscle or soft tissue problems identified.
Aim of Remedial Massage
The aim of remedial massage is to relieve any muscle tension and treat chronic pain.
Remedial massages are outcome directed and therefore focus on specific body part(s).
Who is Remedial Massage Good For?
This form of massage is good for anybody, including those with medical conditions, given its therapeutic and calming nature.
While often remedial massage can be mostly relaxing and therapeutic, at times the treatment can be quite concentrated with longer holds on pressure points that might cause discomfort. This pressure can at times be painful, it should feel like a ‘good pain’. With sustained pressure this pain should ease as the muscles/trigger points relax. Treatment should not cause you to hold your breath or tense your muscles further.
