Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my knee pain is serious?
- If your knee is very painful
- You can not bend or straighten it fully
- You can not walk properly without pain in the knee
- Your knee is swollen or doesn’t look like it’s normal shape
- If the knee is red or hot and you generally don’t feel well, could be a sign of infection

What causes pain in knees without injury?
Pain in the knee without a direct injury could be referred pain; an overuse injury to tendons or other structures around the knee; arthritis.
Again, it could be worth getting this checked out by a professional.
When should I worry about knee pain?
What is the fastest way to relieve knee pain?
Rest is often a good start, especially if there is swelling within the knee, allow the swelling to settle and see if you can gradually return to your normal activities.
If your symptoms don’t settle down within a few weeks it would be worth seeking medical advice.
Is walking good for knee pain?
Gentle walking can be good for your knee pain.
It is advisable to build up the distance you walk depending on your symptoms. Don’t start out with a 10-mile hill walk especially if you never did this before you had your knee pain!
Start on as flat level terrain you can find. If you’re walking on grass keep an eye out for any uneven patches in the turf.
What happens at an appointment?
If you present with knee pain, we will have a chat about you and your injury. If it is not an obvious injury, we will discuss your medical history to see if we can find a cause for your pain.
Depending on what your goals are, together we will come up with a treatment plan to get you back to them.
You will receive a rehab exercise programme to work through between appointments and then at each review we will progress the exercises getting you a step closer to achieving your goals.
